چکیده

The kinetics of the annihilation process, A + A → 0, with ballistic particle motion is investigated when the distribution of particle velocities is discrete. This discreteness is the source of many intriguing phenomena. In the mean field limit, the densities of different velocity species decay in time with different power law rates for many initial conditions. For a onedimensional symmetric system containing particles with velocity 0 and ±1, there is a particular initial state for which the concentrations of all three species as decay as t. For the case of a fast “impurity” in a symmetric background of + and − particles, the impurity survival probability decays as exp(−const.× ln t). In a symmetric 4-velocity system in which there are particles with velocities ±v1 and ±v2, there again is a special initial condition where the two species decay at the same rate, t, with α ∼= 0.72. Efficient algorithms are introduced to perform the large-scale simulations necessary to observe these unusual phenomena clearly.

Kinetics of Ballistically-Controlled Reactions

We investigate the kinetics of generic single-species reaction processes when the reactants move ballistically, namely ballistic annihilation, A + A 0, and a ballistic aggregation process which mimics traffic flow on a single-lane roadway. For ballistic annihilation, dimensional analysis shows that the concentration and root means square velocity decay as c P and u N r-6, respectively, with a +...

Ballistic annihilation kinetics for a multi-velocity one-dimensional ideal gas is studied in the framework of an exact analytic approach. For an initial symmetric three-velocity distribution, the problem can be solved exactly and it is shown that different regimes exist depending on the initial fraction of particles at rest. Extension to the case of a n-velocity distribution is discussed. PACS ...

Some exact results for Boltzmann's annihilation dynamics.

The problem of ballistic annihilation for a spatially homogeneous system is revisited within Boltzmann's kinetic theory in two and three dimensions. Analytical results are derived for the time evolution of the particle density for some isotropic discrete bimodal velocity modulus distributions. According to the allowed values of the velocity modulus, different behaviors are obtained: power law d...

Decay Kinetics in Ballistic Annihilation

For irreversible diffusion-controlled reactions, it is now widely appreciated that the density decays more slowly than the predictions of mean-field theory in sufficiently low spatial dimension. For two-species annihilation, this behavior is accompanied by the dynamic formation of large-scale spatial heterogeneities in an initially homogeneous system [1]. The contrasting situation where the rea...

Dynamics of ballistic annihilation.

The problem of ballistically controlled annihilation is revisited for general initial velocity distributions and an arbitrary dimension. An analytical derivation of the hierarchy equations obeyed by the reduced distributions is given, and a scaling analysis of the corresponding spatially homogeneous system is performed. This approach points to the relevance of the nonlinear Boltzmann equation f...
